After Edinson Cavani cancelled out Gerard Moreno's opener and the match ended 1-1 after extra time, Geronimo Rulli saved David De Gea's penalty to seal a dramatic 11-10 shootout win.
But it was ex-Spurs midfielder Capoue who was named man of the match at the Stadion Gdansk – a far different stage than Watford's earlier this season trips to Wycombe and Barnsley.

"Roller coaster, roller coaster," he chuckled. "Emotionally, it was a difficult season for me. It was extremely difficult.
"I've been through a few things. It was extremely difficult.
"But everything happens for a reason, and I'm just happy and grateful to be here and to enjoy this moment fully."
Capoue joined Villarreal from Watford at the beginning of the season and has quickly established himself as a key player under Emery.
"I got the chance to come here and ended up lifting the trophy, which is the most important thing for us," the 32-year-old said.
"I'm just overjoyed to have won today." What is Unai's secret? He's a powerful coach. He no longer has anything to prove.
"It's a masterclass, and he demonstrated it again today."
